An example

Here is one that surprised me. I thought the concept of a monumnet to General Sam Garland at Fox’s Gap was a new idea. Evidently not.

General E. A. Carman of the Antietam Battlefield Board & c.

Dear Sir,
Your favor of June 14 is received, wishing to know if I will give the government permission to erect on my property at Fox’s Gap a memorial of General Garland, C.S.A. With thanks for your courtesy, I regret to have to say that I can never willingly consent that such marker be erected on property owned by me.
I am truly sorry,

Madeliene Vinton Dahlgren
