James,
Certainly, I will be pleased to do so. Check with me around Labor Day and I'll be able to tell you a price, make arrangements, etc. Thanks for your interest, and your kind remembrance.

Paul,
You're quite welcome, and thanks for your kind hospitality. we had a wonderful time there. My mentor, Dr. Joe Harsh, was such a deep thinker, he really started me on the path of dispassionately examining the record and ignoring the repetetive nonsense so ever-present in many works. His Taken at the Flood is a great book.

Tom, thanks for coming to Oxford. Your Antietam talk got me thinking about how we analyse victories. You broke down your conclusions, convincing me of a clear Union victory. I have always wondered what Lee was doing by offering battle where he did. I must now read J Harsh.

Cliff,
Thanks for your comment, and I am fascinated about the sword issue, will keep my eyes open for you. There are four Lewis Reed leters in the Gould Papers, although the one posted here is the most detailed about the battle. If you can provide a surface mail address I can send copies of what I have. You may send it as a message to my facebook account if you'd rather not post this info.

Lewis Reed was my great grandfather, and I have a framed photographic portrait of him hanging in my living room. He passed away in 1925, and is buried in Spring Lake Cemetery, Rockland, Mass. His grave is about 4 or 5 gravesites to the left of my father.
I know that his sword is out there somewhere, a gift from his friends of East Abington on the occasion of his commissioning, and that it is in the hands of a privates collector. I have made several inquiries as to it's location and condition, but have received no responses.

Thank you for posting this letter, as it is the only known correspondence from "gramps" of which I am aware. If you know of more, please let me know.

Congratulations, Tom. Very well deserved recognition for the dedication and love you put into your work/passion. May there be many, many more accolades with Volume II.

Tom,
I've thought long about your post and how to comment on it. Men (and women) react differently to close combat. The same individual can even react differently at different times. It is not uncommon for a veteran NCO or officer to suddenly reach a "tipping" point that ones senses and sensibilities have been crossed. It isn't that the individual is a coward, but his psychological limit has been reached. For many highly trained and prepared individuals this tipping point can seem virtually endless. One book, "Men Against Fire" by SLA Marshall addressed the subject (although much of Marshall's research is now in question). I don't think anyone should be surprised to see an officer suddenly "lose it." My surprise is the difference in how Carmen handle the situation with COL William Christian next door.
